remembering to forget

There are times when i think i stare at a moment a little too hard. I want to capture every moment, every single instance, every face and every emotion. A song and picture for every moment, but only to watch it shrivel into oblivion. Sometimes when you think about some people, all that stays with you is a name, an idea and a fantastical image - a picture of an imaginary person. Soon he is a figment of your imagination.

This is when it gets difficult and strangely, disconcerting. Sometimes the painful, hurtful and the unhappy just get wiped out. A clean slate and it's only the sparkling moments that stand out. But i also want to remember why i frowned, and how much i held back the tears and when was it that i bit my lip till i could taste the blood.

There are times when i watch in disbelief at familiar memories falling apart. Just like how you would imagine portraits on sand to fly away in a desert. A gust of wind and the most delicate top layer that holds the secrets skims away and flies, dissipating into nothingness. The portrait lies there - vulnerable and orphaned. It's only a matter of time before it ceases to exist and you begin to believe that the memory never was.
