Nothing about him was straightforward.

Sometimes people just connect, effortlessly, and skip the part where they communicate. They just want to, and do, and it's like nothing else could have happened; it's the water you needed your whole life and for years you just flower and float and smile. You go along with it because it feels just right, and you'd give up anything just to see what happens next.

Then it stops just like it started and you wonder how that could have been real. And later you think back and realize your imagination cannot stretch that far. It happened because he saw you and you saw him and sometimes it happens that way, because it has to. Emotions are tricky like that. But you knew you were juggling knives, that it could come back on you and before you feel any pain you see it happening in slow motion.

This is worse than a mirage, and better, because it's not a trick of the light but you can never get any closer.

You want to shake him and you want to cry out loud, you want to delete his text messages, you want to read them over and over again, you want to turn around and forget you ever saw his serious face, you want to take a picture and bury it in a secret place. Finally you decide that your time is better spent in difficult reality than chasing that shiny tantalizing mirage. However, his familiar touch is tattooed on your skin, and when you graze it with your finger it's sore and bittersweet.
