I'll never forget the time in school when i overheard a group of guys complaining about the haze and polluted air. Only when i got closer then i realised that they were smoking. Sweet, sweet irony.
Millions of people, all across the world, smoke tobacco. Most wish that they could give up and even the most ardent, unapologetic smokers will readily concede that the habit is messy, pungent, socially awkward at times and physically harmful.
So why do they carry on?
Because the yearning to scratch that itch is so intense. The need to feed that addiction is stronger than all logic.
Like the essence of love. The notion of success. Some say that these things defy reason as well. But not everything that cannot be rationalized means they are real though. Selfish ambition becomes fulfilling society's expectations. Unhealthy desires can be mistaken as passion, reckless behavior is disguised as spontaneity. Semantics, i say. We are so good at convincing others, we managed to fool ourselves as well.
That's the side-effect of humanity. We guard against the most unlikely and irrelevant threats. Then we live in fear of imaginary problems while walking blindly towards genuine dangers.
