Choirboy Jo brought me to Pepper Lunch for dinner today. Irony not intended. It was my first time there and i love the place! Cozy ambience and delicious pepper beef slices. It was fun to stir-fry the sizzling meat and rice on the hot plate. Haha. This is what i call clever consumerism.
We were at the Central Mall, a new shopping arcade in Clarke Quay, one whose existence i had never known til today. It was tall and spacious, chock full of little boutiques and plenty of interesting eating places. As they like to say, there's something for everyone in there.
But i didn't feel a thing.
Once upon a time in my teens, because we had so little to begin with in the first place, life was always full of surprises. Wherever i went, i could be sure of encountering something new. When the construction of Jurong Point was finally completed, the 13 year old lakeside girl was ecstatic. Then along the years came chain stores; international conglomerates creating identical shopping malls in every town across the planet. Everything was silver and spanking new. Hello new Marina Square, VivoCity, VeloCity, Raffles eXchange, Dobby eXchange and the like. I mean, the influx of shopping malls are great and convenient...
...BUT why do the ones in Singapore look the same?
Call it cosmopolitan or what not, but sometimes it still feels like a concrete jungle with little soul. And it is no wonder that we as consumers lead carbon copy lives wherever we are as well. Sigh. Maybe it's just me. Me and my aversion to routine and my nature to thrive on novelty. When a place or situation is all mapped out, it won't be long before i lose interest in it. I will always love the Lion City as my home, but i do miss the wonder and amazement i had towards every discovery of it in the past.
I guess i really, really need a summer holiday soon.
