soulmates

If you ask people whether they believe in God these days, the most popular answer seems to be, "Well, i believe in something, not exactly God, or that Jesus fella, but some sort of Creator i guess.." Vague religious sensation is safer and thus more common than atheism. But in an age when absolute beliefs are rare, the concept of soulmates seem to stand firm in all segments of society. Everyone knows that nobody is perfect but how about somebody out there who's the most perfect for you? Whether this is true or not, it's a comforting thought ain't it.

But...i don't believe in soulmates. Why, are you surprised to hear that?

My disbelief isn't born of walking a down-trodden path of love and getting disillusioned in the journey (and that never happened to me). Neither is it replete with skepticism of seeing and hearing too much, because God knows that i've never stopped believing in long distance love and rainbow coloured dreams, in sunshine after rain and til-death-do-us-parts. But believing in the concept of soulmates is just..dangerous, it offers an empty faith that denies responsibility. It's like if you believe that this person is destined to be with you, you might choose to ignore everything else even though you are in the most destructive misogynistic relationship. Or likewise, you might be in a perfectly good relationship, but you allow it to be damaged by doubts that it isn't 'the one', rather than making an effort to improve and cherish what you already have. We have a blueprint of who we really want in life and by the time we take our eyes off the measurement list, it's too late to find those who have passed us by.

What Weekeong told us was right: we are malleable and adjustable, it is plain selfish and useless to be waiting for the right fit when instead, we should strive to BE the right fit for others. But well, that's human nature for you - we refuse to let anyone less than our imaginary ideal into all the little corners of our heart simply because we are so full of ourselves, we think that even our flaws are beautiful in their own discoloured, discordant way.
