epiphany

It was a call from her best friend that woke her up.

"Quick, turn on the tv. The World Trade Center Towers have collasped!" She watched in horror as the city of her dreams was plunged into chaos. Bodies were retrieved, places cordoned off and a deep sense of shock had taken over.

In that split moment, she saw past all of what was before her: her colour tv set, the dirty windows in the living room, the grass outside growing tall enough for the wind to catch, the shapes and lines of her house, her rusted, tireless Chevy at the carpark. Everything was the same -- it was the mood and tone that shifted, the colors that flooded in, the reds and yellows, oranges and purples, when the world seemed to come alive for her. She realised then how flimsy life was. 'I will start living for the day', she resolved. She would live out her wildest dreams, chuck the job she hated so much, take up a new language course, go on a round-the-world trip, sit on all the roller-coaster rides she could and eat all the ice cream there was. For she may be dead tomorrow.

Six months later, she was still in the same job. With an old car and HDB loan that would take 15 years to pay off.
