clubbing is not my culture
So i've finally caught Initial D with Lionel and Don, and was more than a little disappointed - not by them, by the movie lah.
First of all, whats up with Shawn Yue and his silly looking moustache? Looks so wrong, like a beard on a 10 year old. Secondly, there's not enough of Edison Chen and his knees-weakening lazy grin to go about. And except the girl for obvious reasons, the cast looks so blatantly Chinese, or maybe it's just me. Don says that Jay Chou has 2 expressions throughout the movie - with his eyes open and with his eyes shut. I guess he's not going to win anything for this year's Golden Horse Awards huh. Speaking of Don, he was so inspired after the movie that he almost wanted to try 'drifting' on the PIE with his Jeep.
The guys went to cheong at Zouk after that. Very happening. I went back home to play with my rabbits and watch insects do what insects do over at National Geographic.
I remembered the last time i went to Zouk was last year, i sneaked out of my house at 11+pm when my parents are asleep and sped down in a cab to meet Grace and her friends. I can't dance to save my life so when they dragged me down i moved my limbs half-heartedly at the dance floor, while looking at people doing para-para, some gyrating with obvious discomfort on the platform and me trying not to think, "where's the fun in that?", seeing pretty girls sprawled on the ground in their own vomit, stoned at Phuture because i hate music that is too loud, and went back home at 5am with a temporary loss of hearing. That was my first and i supposed last time i had ever stepped into Zouk.
When i ask the guys why they club, the obvious answer is "to drink".
But if you just want a drink, you could as easily (and more cheaply) pour yourself and your friends a stiff one at home, no? Why endure the presence of strangers, second-hand smoke, and music that isn't to your taste (sometimes) for the sake of pricey plonk served up by an overworked bartender who allows the group of babes behind you to jump queue? Well, i like to think thats because they can see beautiful people there, meet lotsa friends and make new ones at the same time; nightspots like Zouk are safe (err i think so), vibrant and social, yet are laced with a hint on adrenaline and danger, where one may be alone in a crowd, but also stroking the chance of a liaison with an as-yet-unknown someone, who might be just the next martini and a pick-up line away.
Mabybe it's a nice, heady little atmosphere - a cocktail you can't mix for yourself at home. The final nail in the drink-at-home coffin must also be that when you get sloshed all by yourself at your own bachelor pad, there's no one to peel you off the parquet flooring.
But clubbing has never been my culture.
